A community fundraiser in Newport Beach, California, raised $25,000 to support educational opportunities and leadership development for children and teenagers growing up in underserved neighbourhoods.
The third annual Rosé on the Bay fundraiser brought together more than 50 women at a waterfront home in Newport Beach. Through donations and an opportunity drawing, the gathering raised funds for KidWorks, a nonprofit based in nearby Santa Ana that supports children, young people and families through academic, spiritual and leadership programmes.
The event was organised by a committee chaired by Newport Beach resident Sue Willett, alongside community members and KidWorks board representatives. Local businesses also contributed through sponsorships and donated items, helping the gathering generate funds for the organisation’s work.
Founded in 1993, KidWorks works with children and families in central Santa Ana, providing support designed to help young people succeed in school, develop leadership skills and prepare for higher education. Its approach recognises that children’s opportunities are shaped not only by what happens in the classroom, but also by the support, guidance and resources available to their families and communities.
The organisation’s long-term commitment to students is central to its model. Rather than focusing on a single intervention, KidWorks works to support young people through different stages of their educational journey, helping them build the confidence and skills needed to pursue further education and future careers.
According to the organisation’s reported results at the time of the fundraiser, all of its high school students had graduated on time and progressed to higher education over the preceding seven years.
For the organisers, the fundraiser was also an opportunity to introduce more community members to KidWorks and encourage continued involvement in its work. The event demonstrated how local networks, individual giving and business contributions can come together to help sustain programmes for young people.
The $25,000 raised through Rosé on the Bay illustrates how community-led fundraising can support organisations working to widen educational access and create opportunities for children whose circumstances might otherwise limit their prospects.
KidWorks continues to work with young people and families in central Santa Ana, guided by the belief that a child’s neighbourhood should not determine their future.
